What is the procedure for renewing a surface treated with Epifanes marine varnish several years ago?

It is crucial to regularly and carefully examine previously varnished surfaces to determine if refreshing is necessary. If the original varnish is left too long without renewal, it can start to crack and absorb moisture, which can cause the wood to become grayish and make the finish irreparable. In such cases, the surface needs to be completely sanded and varnished again.

If the examination of the surface shows that it is still intact and can be refreshed, the first step is to clean it with Denatured Alcohol and then sand it with 220-grit sandpaper to roughen it, ensuring good adhesion of the new varnish. Two coats of varnish should then be applied at the recommended interval. It is not necessary to dilute the varnish before application.

Reacting at the right time to refresh varnished surfaces will ensure that you can maintain your finish for extended periods.
